Week of July 15th - Ready for Drive to NH/Maine!

Monday: Busy day with Ford going to his Parkinson exercise class, I chatted with Terri (she's home, feeling much better - not Lyme's disease) and Mom (she was driving to visit/stay with Terri for a day as she is still very weak). We went to Walmart for prescriptions, then Metro Diner for an early lunch (not cooking dinner). AA drove us to Carolyn's, left Ginger there. Back home to continue packing, put Hilary's glasses in the back of the truck, plus our three bag chairs. Will fill cooler and load truck in the morning.

Carolyn walked Ginger and sent us a good night picture!
Tuesday: 07/16/24 We made a good start in the morning, driving to Washington DC. We left Fleming Island, at 7:10 a.m. which was very good considering all we had to pack up and load into the truck. I drove until we got to the South Carolina welcome center then Alyzabeth drove for 2 1/2 hours until we stopped for our lunch at the Buc-ees in South Carolina. We bought gas for the truck and then back on the road and made another stop at a Wawa for gas. Alyzabeth drove for another hour and we made it to our hotel at 6:30 p.m. which is on the southern area of Washington DC beltway I495.  Our room is a bit strange as it has a toilet room with tiny sink and then a closet and then a separate room with a shower and vanity sink. The pullout sofa is actually a trundle bed plus the two queen beds. We walked to the Italian restaurant. It was very good. They are a pizzeria and had at least a dozen dinner menu items. I had a salad with balsamic dressing and a side of broccoli. Alyzabeth ordered the Caesar salad with chicken and Ford had a meat lovers pizza. Plenty of food and we brought the pizza back to our room. We also had a glass and a half of Italian wine which is very good. It was nice to just be able to walk two buildings over to a restaurant from our hotel. We watched the America’s Got Talent on TV. And of course most all stations have on the Republican national convention.
Least expensive gas we found! Most was between $3.30 - $3.60/gal.
Wednesday: Back on the road to New Hampshire.
Wednesday morning I woke up a little after three mainly due to the noise of the metro subway, cars trains come in and going across the street from our hotel. We went to the free breakfast and I had coffee and oatmeal as usual. Ford and Alyzabeth didn’t eat much for breakfast. We were on the road at 8 AM as today should be an easy driving day. We did run into some road construction and several slowdowns, slow going on DC beltway and north thru each city - finally getting on I-87, AA and Ford took me on Highway 17 for at least 15 miles, I felt like I was driving down Blanding Blvd.
At Newburgh, needed a bathroom break and gas - AA navigated me into downtown Newburgh unintentionally.
Looked for a quiet park to eat lunch, had a picnic lunch at Newburgh, NY and walked through George Washington’s headquarters on the Hudson River.
We made it a little north of Springfield Massachusetts by 4:30. AA drive for the last 2.5 hours. We are staying in the residence inn by Marriott at Chicopee. We unloaded our luggage and decided on a local Mexican restaurant for our takeout dinner tonight. They goofed the order by including buffalo chicken wings instead of my requested guacamole. Alyzabeth and I drove there in my lightning storm and made it back without getting too wet. This room has almost no USB ports for our for charging our electronics. I did get an upgrade, so Alyzabeth had her own bedroom and bathroom and TV. It’s a great set up for us.
Thursday: Drove from Chicopee, MA to North Conway, NH - see separate post.
Friday: We woke up to the hotel room alarm at 6:00 a.m. - didn't check it the night before! We had the free breakfast, then AA worked on her statistics and I on this blog. Took our two-hour tour of Mt. Washington - Separate post.
Afterwards, we went to the Lobster Trap for lobster rolls - all with warm butter - very good. Back at the hotel, I chatted with Mom about Sunday's plans, walked a bit and bought three tickets for a chairlift ride up the Cranmore Mountain tomorrow. After a rest (AA studying statistics) we went to Tuckerman Brewery where they were just wrapping up the Seek the Peak opening party celebration. Saturday is the fund raiser for the Mount Washington Observatory.
Ordered pizza from Flatbread, very good, enjoyed back at our room.
Saturday: We took the chairlift to the top of Cranmore Mountain.
We slept until 7 AM even though Ford and I were up for a couple hours during the night. We went to our free breakfast and I enjoyed my morning coffee. Alyzabeth studied for her statistics test, which she is going to take early afternoon today. We all walked over to the Mount Crane Moore scenic chairlift and rode it to the top of the mountain. The mountain is about 2000' elevation at the summit. we noticed the temperature difference definitely got cooler at the summit. We walked around a bit went to the little restaurant, top lodge area and I found blackberries to pick. After taking a few pictures, we got back on the chairlift and went back down to the base of the mountain.  Ford did well walking to and from the hotel to the base of the mountain. We went back to the room and helped Alyzabeth set up the mirror and everything for her statistics test. Ford and I went to the outlet stores, including L. L. Bean where Ford bought a pair of shoes and I picked up some shorts and bathing suit tops.  Also went to Skechers and I didn’t buy anything. Once Alyzabeth was done with her test we went to lunch at Mountain Moose noodle restaurant and it had a Samuel Adams beer garden outside. It is a bit hot, at 84° and the food was just okay. Alyzabeth enjoyed her bowl, where is Ford and I would select something different if we ate there again.
We went back to the hotel room, and I did a load of wash and the dryer and rested a little bit. About 6:30 PM we went to dinner at the Sea Dogs, but there was over 30-minute wait so we went to the Abenaki restaurant which was supposedly rated very high, it was not crowded but my Greek salad is very good, very fresh. The chili nachos that we all shared were a bit heavy. Alyzabeth and I then walked over to the Lickety Splitz ice cream shop and bought a scoop of vanilla ice cream for Ford, I had mint chocolate chip with hot fudge sauce and Alyzabeth had two scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Nice treat but we really didn’t need the extra food or calories as we were full of dinner.
We came home and watched the women’s professional basketball team go against the women’s Olympic basketball team. We also watched a Hallmark movie and actually enjoyed a quote that was about coloring within the lines because if you go outside the lines, it just gets messy. We check out of the hotel tomorrow morning and after we organize everything and pack up will head to Windham, to the Amato and pick up sandwiches to take to Mom‘s house.
Sunday: Drove to Gray, Maine - Bought sandwiches (Mom paid for) and soda at Amato's (Windham) - Arrived at LSL! See separate post.
