AA is in the "Spotlight" and Lauren Waidner's Award

And the week leading up to our drive to Washington DC, begins. Work for me, school for AA. Dentist for Ford.

And we heard the news about former Fleming High School Golf standout and nicest person who took AA out golfing many times.

The Tom Cousins Award is presented annually to an outstanding male and female golfer who epitomizes the standards of the East Lake Foundation, both excelling academically and demonstrating extreme engagement in his or her community. Lauren Waidner is the first Florida women's golfer to receive this award. Prior to entering college, Waidner was a member of the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Leadership Links Program and raised money for Reach Out and Read. Since joining the Florida women's golf program, she has been hyperactive in the Gainesville community, mostly focusing her attention on healthcare. She became a member of Streetlight, a program that mentors and supports critically ill adolescents, helped to organize a Climb for Cancer event, and works with the Florida Student-Athlete Advisory Committee visiting local schools and packaging shoes for underprivileged children.

Utilizing the internship program sponsored by the University Athletic Association, Waidner worked at UF Health Shands during the summer of 2019. During her time, she developed a relationship with a critically ill patient whose perspective altered Waidner's idea of strength. This experience led her to Streetlight, a volunteer program which provides support and resources to critically and chronically ill adolescents. Over the past year, Waidner has visited the hospital weekly. In her own words, "the game of golf is no longer just a game for me, but rather an outlet through which I can find new ways to help others."

Jack had us submit an article about Alyzabeth and he reworked it:

Text Version of In the Spotlight - NFJG

Here's the text version of Alyzabeth's NFJG In The Spotlight:

One of the great things about being the Executive Director of the North Florida Junior Golf Foundation and Tour is that I have the distinct pleasure of meeting and knowing many great diversified junior players, their parents, grandparents and siblings with outstanding stories. It’s truly an honor to give back and recognize one of the many families or individuals who have given so much. So, for this “In the Spotlight” moment I would like to recognize and showcase a young lady who knows the meaning of being committed, dedicated and the fight needed to win over all obstacles. This youngster is a success story on and off of the golf course. "ALYZABETH  AN MORGAN”.

An ALL inspiring story

Alyzabeth Morgan attended Orange Park Elementary school through 6th grade and is now in 8th grade at Orange Park Junior High. She is now a 14 year old, a bit taller, a bit more muscular, a little wiser and has a set of teenager braces on her teeth, all normal growing pains for one of the up and coming youth golfers in Clay County, but not deterring her from continuing her goal to be one of the best young golfers in America.

The Morgan family (Ford Alyson, and Alyzabeth) recently moved to the Eagle Harbor neighborhood, to be closer to Alyzabeth's home golf course. They all enjoy living at Eagle Harbor for the friendly, family atmosphere and the excellent teaching professionals like her PGA Professionals and Coach Bryan Kipnis and Stephanie Connelly Eiswerth.

Next year, Alyzabeth will enter high school with a goal of making the school golf team as a Freshman, either at Fleming Island High School or Ridgeview High School. Hopefully, the game of golf will be a lifelong gift for Alyzabeth to enjoy.

Alyzabeth Morgan has been on the NFJG TOUR since June of 2014. She has played in 117 NFJG TOUR events and has championed events 37 times Player of the Year Alyzabeth Morganwith 32 Runner-up Awards. She was named the 2017 and 2018 Player of Year and has captured the City Junior Amateur, Greater Jacksonville Junior Championship, King and Bear Open 3-times, Web.com Junior Tour Championship and, The National Challenge to name a few. Alyzabeth has a low round of “73” in tournament play.

Let’s hear MORE about this amazing young superstar!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT – Alyzabeth An Morgan

“What’s really special or unique about Alyzabeth?” As Northeast Florida is truly a golfer’s paradise, early on Ford and Alyson were enthused when Alyzabeth seemed to like the golf lessons from her first coach and being in the outdoor atmosphere. Alyzabeth came all of the way from Chongqing City, China to discover how much she likes golf. Her parents, Ford and Alyson received the news of their new daughter on 08/08/2008 and flew to China to meet her. They arrived in time to celebrate her second birthday together. She had not been outdoors her first two years in China so acclimating her to Florida and golfing was a joy to watch.

Another special treat for the Morgan’s was watching what many golfers take years to accomplish and that’s making a hole in one, in July 2014, Alyzabeth achieved what many golfers only dream of – a hole in one as a seven year old! And she hit it from the Ladies (yes – adults!) red tees and now is a member of the NFJG Foundations “HOLE-IN-ONE Club.

“How did Alyzabeth get started in golf and how long has she been playing?” A common question asked of most young golfers and for Alyzabeth Morgan that answer was an eyebrow raising four and a half years old. Actually, you could dial that timeline back to three and a half years old when she received her plastic Disney princess golf club set from Nana of the North, Alyzabeth’s golf loving grandmother from Maine. Since that day in 2010, many winning shots would be made as she dominated the Solo plastic cup putting contests against her dad on their improvised indoor course, sparking her curiosity. It was mom, Alyson, who made the family life changing request to the stay-at-home dad, “Ford, why not take her with you when you go to the course to hit balls, let her try playing at the driving range”.

Alyzabeth’s skills grew from putting into cups around the house to playing on real grass. She was mentored and trained by her beloved Coach PGA Professional Doug Cody, who saw her talent and helped it blossom. Her very first tournament in August of 2012 (U.S. Kids Orlando) had Alyzabeth as the youngest playing in a field of five girls. And she came in fifth. Not to be deterred, she played in a River Bend Youth Golf clinic in December 2012. Again the youngest, at age 6, Alyzabeth teed off from the same distance as the big kids – some as old as thirteen. This time she bested all of them to come in with the lowest score!

“Did anything special influence Alyzabeth?” In 2014, at the age of seven Alyzabeth began playing the NFJG TOUR starting out in the “Foundation Division”. What an eye opener to see her play the longer distances and the amount of competition. We heard about the NFJG TOUR when we met Jack Aschenbach at THE PLAYERS Championship Golf tournament, at the practice area open to the public with professionals giving each person a quick 5 minute coaching session. Everyone looked at her Dad Ford to select a club but it was Alyzabeth who stepped up, meeting Mr. Jack. From that day, we have been grateful to the NFJGF organization for the wonderful tournaments offered to youth golfers. She has always expressed a desire to “play up” with the older girls and has now reached the Elite Girls tour.

There is a story that unfolded near the beginning of their day. As they entered the golf course, they saw an area set up with four or five golf professionals with people swinging clubs. Hubby and AA (Alyzabeth) decided to wait in line to see what was going on. While in line Ford chatted with a local U.S. Kids family, the Flemings. As they waited, they saw each fan select a club, then take a turn at hitting golf balls into a net a few times while getting a quick tip; Ford thought they were just allowing everyone to take a few swings and then move on. Alyzabeth selected a kids driver, closest to her size (it was longer than what she was used to).

When their turn came, the next available professional called them over to his area. He looked at Ford expectantly and Ford pointed to AA as she had the club. He said, “Oh, okay young lady, take a few practice swings”. So she took some practice swings and the man stood up straight and watched, raised an eye brow and exclaimed “Whoa”. Yep, she plays. He saw her U.S. Kids golf cap.

Then he asked who Alyzabeth’s coach was. Ford answered Doug Cody at River Bend. The man slowly looked at Ford. And then the recognition. Looking back to Alyzabeth he said, “This is Alyzabeth, I was at Doug’s funeral”. Yep, he knew Doug. He was at Doug’s funeral and heard all that was said there to honor him.

Once again, not by chance and nothing to do with Doug has been a coincidence.  Doug, a religious man said God told him to teach Alyzabeth; and now this man was now giving tips to AA and knew Doug very well.

The Pro asked AA to hit more balls; he held her shoulders and showed her how to finish the swing with her shoulders. Then he had her hit balls about half dozen more times.

He told Ford, she’s ready for junior golf. He gave Ford his card and said he would love to have her play on the North Florida Junior Golf Tour (he was Jack Aschenbach, President of the North Florida PGA Chapter and Director for the North Florida Junior Golf Foundation).

Funny, that just that morning, Ford had sent an email to that very organization to see about AA playing in that league, even though she didn’t meet the minimum age. Jack said, “We make exceptions”.  Coincidence? That Ford and AA stepped up to the first available spot and it was a friend of Doug’s?  And then we grieve all over again, for what we miss so very much.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Over the years, AA has watch her parents donate time and money to various charities and included AA on these activities. The dog food donations all began when AA asked about having a pet dog. She has wanted a dog for as long as her parents could remember. Ford and Alyson had a small (non-shedding) rescue pet mutt, unfortunately he passed when AA was still 2 years old. We finally agreed to find a puppy (after making her write down the pros and cons!) and the rule was a small non-shedding breed. About the same time, before finding the right puppy, we discussed her upcoming birthday in 2016 and any gifts she wanted. She couldn’t think of anything so we discussed an option of doing something for a charity. Through her conversations about wanting a dog and the need for pet food donations in our county shelters, AA decided to ask her friends and family to bring a bag of dog food in lieu of birthday gifts if they wished. Five years later, this year 2020, she donated over 500 pounds to the Middleburg safe (no-kill) shelter. And, in the end she has her labradoodle Ginger to hug and love daily (and they, Ford and AA, did not follow the rules – Ginger is not small at 50 pounds!).

NC PRO-LADY AT EAGLE HARBOR - Team Play

Alyzabeth was asked to be on Stephanie's team: Stephanie Eiswerth, Alicia Connelly, Penny Reynen, Alyzabeth Morgan.
She was also asked to be on Jack's team - she played on his team last year (they placed third, held in July at Windy Harbor). This tournament is always held at the Mayport Base but due to COVID restrictions at the base, they relocated to Eagle Harbor which is great for us!
FORMAT OF PLAY: (1) Professional & (3) Amateurs
Team Score - Two Net Best Balls
YARDAGES (Par 72): Male Professional - 6200-6300 yards; Female Professional - 78-85% of Male

Their team placed tied for 10th with a total score of -5. A beautiful day, a bit hot at 85 degrees, but the occasional breeze kept us cooler in the shade.
From Facebook: AA had a wonderful time playing with lady golfers in the NC Pro-Lady Tournament at Eagle Harbor. The team didn't finish near the top but said she stayed in the fairway and her driver working well for her, scored a 76. Enjoyed playing with Penny, Stephanie and Alicia. Thank you to Stephanie for the ask.

Mrs. Alicia almost had an eagle on the first hole!

Weekend!

The past few days were uneventful with AA doing her virtual school, my working, AA's golf practice. The highlight was the national Honor Society ceremony on Thursday. At work, a company, ERS was hired to relocate gopher tortoises from the landfill B closing area:

Saturday, AA finished writing her thank you notes, had five remaining to do for our neighbors who gave her dog food.
I decided to withdraw from the first "Operation36" class. Just too much money at $275 each (AA is in the Thursday class). I like learning the game of golf, but will do so on my own for a while until I determine how serious I am going to take this new hobby!

Ford decided we had not made sausage balls in a long time, so baked a batch today. Always yummy for breakfast or a snack.

We are planning our Washington DC trip, scheduled for next Friday (we cancelled a few weeks ago when the weather forecast predicted 80% rain all weekend). This weekend, will be chilly for us, with highs around 57 degrees! We are packing our winter coats since we are staying outside!

We joined Hugh, Maureen, Kathy and Penny on Zoom for our group Happy Hour. Always a good chat for an hour or so.

Sunday, AA and Ford went to her NFJG Tournament at Bent Creek. I made a new recipe of pumpkin oatmeal cookies. Very different than the other pumpkin molasses ginger cookies. These were softer, chewy with old fashioned oatmeal. Good taste, may try them again by not flattening them as much and baking a little longer.

I went to Carolyn's to pull some weeds, used my Roundup and dropped off a few items. We jumped in the pool to cool off - 87 degrees today! The pool water was 82 and seemed cooler than that. Had a good visit while she was cooking to put up her weekly meals. I took Ginger so she had some time with Bella as they will be together next weekend for four days.
Then for dinner, I tried Ree Drummond's (Pioneer Woman)  Spatchcock Chicken Sheet Pan Supper dinner. Very similar to ones I had made in the past, it was good (we bought a whole chicken already cut up, used fresh rosemary; I added chunks of onion and some baby carrots).

And a funny wine quote:
Tomorrow AA is playing a team tournament, NC PRO-LADY AT EAGLE HARBOR with Stephanie and Penny, should be competitive and fun! That's a wrap for our weekend!

Winner! NFJG Tournament Bent Creek

AA won first place after a playoff at Bent Creek. There were only four Elite Girls which was very unusual:

10:48 AM Alyzabeth Morgan, Neva Winslow

10:57 AM Helena Rios, Danielle Dailey

AA and Neva:

Winner after the tie was determined with a playoff, AA won on the first hole.

National Junior Honor Society!!

What a nice honor, AA has been our all A student since 3rd grade (since letter grades were given). This society is a service organization so community hours are required and there will be some organized events for all members to work together.

AA receiving her certificate from Principal Justin Faulkner:
The group inducted will be eleven when the absent three join.
Mrs. Cheatwood with AA and Principal:
Before the ceremony (I arrived in time from work):
AA outside before the ceremony:
Congratulations!

It's Monday - Still my Day Off From Work!

We early voted in Clay County Florida!! #MyClayVoteCounts

We ran a few errands, then home for lunch with AA. She missed geometry today as there was a Robotics Team meeting. The weather has been very breezy with a few sprinkles, but glorious! The humidity will return for a few days so these "less humid" days are so nice.
In the afternoon, AA went to her school for a Robotics Team meeting (with mask). She has been at her school building only three times since school started and all for necessary events. I went to Walmart to have 50 "2020" photos printed up for posterity (reminders of our very quiet year, hardly any family gathering pictures) and a few duplicates for my Maine family.
We continue to have lively texting with our "political" group - all pro-Democrat! So easy to take to these family and friends. Much information flowed between us, keeping each other laughing or crying based on the news of our President Trump (can't even describe the rudeness, lies, lack of leadership, lack of character, bullying and divisiveness this man creates, plus he doesn't pay his share of taxes).
The rain came in heavy about 5:00 p.m., right after AA and I had a 20 minute bike ride (my new bike glides effortlessly - poor AA was peddling so hard, can't wait for her new bike to arrive). No golfing today - a day off! Ford cooked homemade hamburgers, a treat occasionally. And we played another round of RummiKub - Ford won two games! So sad for us ladies!
And tonight our favorite show, the Voice begins the new season. That's a wrap. Work again tomorrow!

NFJG Eagle Harbor Tournament - Sunday

First tournament of the NFJG season. AA practiced then headed to Hole 1 at her tee time of 12:33 p.m. with Madelyn Campbell (age 16, Amelia River GC).

I joined them briefly at the 9th Hole, I think she was 8 strokes over Par. The distance is longer but her extra strokes were in her short game on Hole 9 (she double bogeyed Holes 8 and 9).
She finished in 4th place, her short game got her today - with a few holes with three putts and missed chips. Overall though, good showing and on to the next tournament!
The winners:
The walk home:
Good job!
