Monday, July 19th - Our Trip Back Home

Monday, we had a lazy morning, laundry and shopping for gifts.
Separate posts on most of these days.
Tuesday, we left Maine! First stop will be Mount Vernon.
Wednesday Mount Vernon (separate post with photos). Dinner at Mamma's Kitchen.
Thursday: Museum of Natural History (separate post with photos) and Georgetown campus self-guided walking tour. I enjoyed the skeletons, minerals and huge elephant at the museum. Ford thought the best thing for him was seeing the Healey Hall at Georgetown campus. AA really liked seeing the campus also.
We drove towards Charlottesville and had two drinks at the Meriwether Lewis Vineyards and Brewery. Quite the history of Meriwether Lewis and Thomas Jefferson (Ivy). We drove to Waynesboro for the night (Residence Inn/Marriott). We had dinner at the River Burger Bar. Fried green tomatoes, burger with chili, BBQ chicken wings and my quesadilla with beef, cheese, onions with black beans and salsa on top.
We got up Friday morning and drove to Jim and Cliffreda.
Arrived at 2:30 and visited. Cliffreda drove us with the three kayaks to the side of the road to carry our kayaks into the river.
Jim, AA and I paddled for over two hours, hitting rocks, getting stuck in shallow water and enjoying the scenery. AA laughed at me, getting stuck and lagging behind.
Sauce used in the chicken lasagna:
Kayaking!
Happy girl, as she misses her Ginger.
Beautiful property:
AA had three doggy friends with Mel, Sid and new Molly. Molly needs a muzzle as she would nip the other dogs, seemed like in jealousy. They all got much attention from AA.
Molly (she's a biter!):
Jim's guacamole and recipe:
Dinner was delicious chicken, spinach lasagna, with salad, garlic toast and chocolate no-bake cookies.
We chatted for awhile and then retired to the off property guest house. We saw many fireflies at both homes, first time I have seen so many. Quiet and comfy.
In the morning, I made coffee for me, cut up fruit for AA. So many treats left for us, fruit, beer, soda, champagne, chocolates, crackers, chips….we only had some fruit as they made us breakfast each morning. Saturday, breakfast was blueberry muffins and peach crescent rolls baked with Mountain Dew! I always love their espresso machine! Next we loaded the bikes for a ride from White Top to MoJo’s. Cliffreda drove us and on this Saturday morning, the trail was crowded. I felt like I vibrated and bounced my entire upper bode during the ride. I was mostly in the lead and was scared when a guy slid/fell off his bike in front of me. Leading, calling out, on your left. Ford was reminded how uncomfortable a bike seat was. We all ended the ride a bit unsteady on our feet. Very fun, with the cool morning breeze and the nerves as we rode by washouts and dropoffs!
Fun ride - we love doing this each time we visit!
Cliffreda made panini sandwiches with chicken, cheese, pesto. And Jim’s homemade guacamole was the best - new secret, add half a fresh orange juice to the avocado mix. More deliciousness. We went back to the guest house, I showered, we rested, then returned to babysit the dogs and eat leftovers while Jim and Cliffreda went to a concert fund raiser in Bristol VA (birthplace of country music).
Sunday morning began with us packing car and Jim’s homemade eggs Benedict. Yum!
We drove to Leaa and Jesse’s North Carolina Rock Cave Road property. Quite the finished cabin, hand hewed boards, views of the trees with peeks of mountains (summer leaves blocking the views). The road was very steep, one car width and worse, sheer drop offs along the way. Cathy said her first time, yesterday, she stopped the car and walked a ways due to the stress of the road design/condition. We enjoyed our visit, touring the cabin, chatting on the deck.
Jesse refreshed our brain on how to take a delayed/timed photo:
Inside the camp:
Nice wide sitting deck:
We spent Sunday night in a town, Cayce, SC, nothing around! We ate dinner at Ocean View Seafood, near Columbia, recommended by the hotel employee, not very good. Blah! In between driving we have been watching the Olympics.
I wish I could write down all the little funny happenings and conversations, this blog does not usually get written in time to remember each laugh we had together. Plus when rewriting it, usually doesn’t seem as funny as when “in the moment”.
Monday morning headed home and picked up Ginger!

Driving Home From Maine - The Read's

We so enjoyed our stay with Jim and Cliffreida! Love their home, hospitality and the fun activities. Food and drink always excellent!
Kayaking! So much fun! The water level was a little low so bumped over some rocks!
Fireflies!
Chicken Lasagna sauce:
Mel and Sid (brothers), Mollie was a bully, biting the other dogs! Otherwise she was a sweet and beautiful dog.
Beautiful waterfront!
Bike riding along the Virginia Creeper Trail:
Jim's famous guacamole:
We hit the road Sunday after breakfast, we are ready to be home after our stop in NC.
