Today is the first day I feel closer to being “retired”. My paid work/career was completed on March 31st. Almost 43 years of a career that was so good to me. Also, completed the task of cleaning out a friend’s home (with much help from family and friends), six months to the day of his death.
Today is a new day, a different start than we dreamed of. Yes, there will be travels, trips; yes, maybe an extra happy hour; saying yes to helping others. I had a few amazing career “angels”; decisions they made that allowed me to thrive. First, my Mom who was on my side when I insisted on going to UMO, the CMP Construction Engineering group and the Foster Wheeler Service group (worked summers and hired me for my first engineer’s job); from there Paul Gaboury, Paul Shipski, David Lawrence and Bruce Studley (all at SECI, mostly indirectly, more from their leadership); and Larry Bradley, definitely my career angel #1. Many co-workers helped me through my engineering and management growth, so many lessons along my journey at SJRPP/JEA in addition to Larry: Bob LeMay, Marty Lee, Jim Read, Bill Hiers, Jay Worley, Paul Smith and Larry Pinkstaff along with my favorite accountant Barbara Whitaker. My last job for the past six years (APTIM), I was grateful a second time for Larry Bradley and Larry Pinkstaff: Gene Scott, Chuck Bursich, Stacy Pollock and Lona Hill. There were wonderful co-workers along the way, too many to name, but all fondly remembered. I made mistakes and was not the most mature person in my early years. Many ups and downs. Always with my husband Ford by my side for the past 39 of those years.❤️
Enjoy each day, do what you can and always call home to Mom.
