Time is either flying or standing still.
Two years ago today a very frightened little girl in a very hot, very humid Chongqing, China was placed into the waiting arms of her Mother. And while time has flown, the memory of that first moment remains frozen in mind and heart. Its impact forever changing us...
Eyes can say so much.
We would be the first family in our group to hold their daughter. We have a video of the occasion though we've never shown it to anyone nor have Alyson and I ever sat down to watch it together. I share this with you. It was brutal. Never have I grieved more for a little one, never have I grieved more for my wife.
I will always remember looking into the eyes of Jim as he handed back the video recorder, a soon to be Dad that had graciously volunteered to film our family event. As he gently put a hand on my shoulder, Jim's eyes revealed fear and sorrow, compassion and love. I am certain our experience caused the other Waiting families to hurriedly assess their expectations and preparedness. I am equally certain each secretly prayed their Forever Family Day would not go as ours. And their prayers were answered...
So much has changed.
I can't help but compare our little one to that of a rose, revealing more and more of her personality and beauty as petals softly unfold.
How far we have all grown since that first moment together. You light up a room Alyzabeth. Your gentleness has made me a better person. Your strength inspires. We all love you.
Today. Tomorrow. Forever...
Has it really been 2 years? September 16, 2008. Our Forever Family Day.
My, my how time flies.

Happy forever family day! Thank you for sharing how hard it was. Being as we are probably going to adopt a toddler I think it is important to know it is not easy.
Oh my -- she was a little one, wasn't she! Think you are so right -- she has bloomed right in front of your eyes. Beautiful girl! Happy anniversary!

I can't believe it's been two years!! I remember following along on your trip to China. AA has truly blossomed into a happy, beautiful child. You are blessed!!
Happy Two Years!!
It is hard to believe that was the same little girl we see today..... she has changed so much. Long gone are those fearful eyes..... Seeing her now, she seems like the happiest girl in the world.
I cried as I read this.... I remember your daily posts and video as you chronicled your journey as if it were yesterday. I know it was not easy, and can only imagine what those first few minutes were like when you met your beautiful little girl. Kind of puts things into perspective as I prepare to meet my daughter in just a few short weeks.
Aly asked this morning.....yes, we will be blogging the whole time we are in China. I am hoping to have access to do it myself, but if I can't get through to blogger, I have reinforcements here in the states:)
Enjoy what is left of your weekend~
Beautiful Post.
xoxo,
Lisa
That would've taken a bit of fortitude to see her grieving so. So happy for you. She is a beautiful, precious little one with as much resilience as her parents. Congratulations!
Happy Forever Family Day - a couple of days late! I was fortunate to be able to travel with my daughter when she received her daughter this August 16th in Chongqing. I just looked back at your experience and we shared so many things. Same hotel, same registrar's office, and we even had Anita as our guide. We were the only family in Chongqing so Anita was wonderful. I don't know what we would have done without her.
AA is such a beautiful little girl who has blossomed in your family. Congratulations!
