It is Official.... Mommy's Name Change!

Confession Time:
I kept my maiden name with only one vow of ever changing it. I told DH (maybe asked, reached an agreement) that I would take on his name if and when we had children. Truth told, DH has always supported my use of my maiden name. I always thought we would have kids and that I would eventually change it. As you know from the blog, we did not have additional kids. We enjoyed 23 years of DD and DS's lives and the large extended family that came with that blessing.

With the arrival of Alyzabeth came the time to make good on my word. I now have a Florida Drivers license with my maiden name as my middle name and my DH's last name. I have conformed to society and have upheld my promise :) Next stop. Social Security.
It wasn't as traumatic as I thought it would be.

The funny thing is, everyone at the driver's license office all must be programed to congratulate new brides. Guess they didn't look at the marriage certificate date!! Twenty-three years late!

Well, you are a woman of your word. I know how hard it is. I didn't take DH's name since I was known professionally by my maiden name. DH has always been just fine with it. Also, it took me years to get my son's name changed to my maiden name, which is his true biological surname. When I married DH a few years ago and Jade was born we were in a real pickle...we wanted her to have the same name as all of us so....we decided to hypenate her last name (poor thing) so that she would always feel she was part of each of us. Its a mouthful for her but I figure she can always change it when she gets married (or not!)

Now, does this mean you will be having a second honeymoon...or at least a second wedding night?? :)

Congratulations on taking that next step, better late than never! It really is hard to give up a maiden name, especially when your degree/s and profession are based on that name. Makes it hard to explain that the diploma on the wall really is yours! Now wait until the first time you have to sign your new last name! It might feel weird for awhile :o)

Congrats! I kept my maiden name as my middle name. They are also my girls middle name also. I feel like that keeps a piece of our Chinese heritage.. Next time if you come to Orlando, drop me an email if you are going to parks. We will love to meet with you guys and beautiful Alyzabeth.

I tried to hang into my maiden name. Professionally it was important to me and I always felt that I did not want to give up who I was. Then came my son, I tried hyphenating our two names, but the first sonogram picture we took they could not fit both names so they only put my maiden name, the look on my poor husbands face, who would have never asked me to change mine name. I looked at him and realized I wanted no confusion, no issues, so I changed it and he was so happy.
Now to tell you my last name, because it makes this story better.
My married name is "Santa" I am Mrs. Santa, now can you see my reluctance in changing my name.

I put my maiden name down as my middle name for most things. It started out because my social security card still had my maiden name and by having it on the license, that created an identity link if I ever needed it. So I didn't rush out to change the ss card-why bother? Then, after we had been married about 20years and were actually getting a tax return (a rare event for us), our electronic filing was denied because someone had already used my number for their new child-an accident on their part, but a nightmare on mine. Needless to say, I got my social security card changed asap after that.

Congratulations Alyson! I did the same thing that you did. I used my maiden name as my middle name. I did it when we got married, but my reasoning was I always hated my middle name and was glad to be rid of it. Better late than never...

My wife really loves me to take a last name like mine!
So how'd you get a certificate with all the purdy flowers and fancy writin'? Ours was typed out on a manual typewriter.

That's a beautiful marriage certificate! Congrats on the name change. I did that last year, and it wasn't nearly as awful as I thought it would be. However, I haven't changed the registration on my car or the name on the deed of the house. I looked into doing those things and it was more work that I wanted. I hope it's okay that I'm not choosing to do those things...
